Landini tractor lights depend on the era: Massey Ferguson era Landinis from the 1960s to the 1980s use round or rectangular halogen headlamps and mudguard rear lamps, Argo era Legend, Powermaster, Vision and Ghibli tractors carry H4 or H7 headlamps and cab-roof work lamps, and recent Landini 5, 6 and 7 Series and Rex4 models offer LED work lights. Identify the range and year first, then match the lamp.

This guide covers how Landini lighting is laid out, the ranges common in the UK, the bulb and voltage points to check, the LED upgrade path, and why many Landini lamps are shared with McCormick under Argo Tractors.

How Landini Tractor Lighting Works

A Landini tractor lighting system is the set of headlamps, work lamps, beacons, cab lights and rear lamps wired through a 12V negative-earth system on the models covered here. Road lighting covers headlamps, sidelights, indicators, stop, tail and number plate lamps; working lighting covers work lamps, beacons and cab interior lights.

Landini is one of the oldest Italian tractor makers. Giovanni Landini founded the business in Fabbrico in 1884, and the first Landini tractor appeared in 1925, powered by a single-cylinder hot-bulb engine. Hot-bulb production ended in the late 1950s. Massey Ferguson bought Landini in 1959, and from 1959 Landini used Perkins engines, as MF did. In 1989 Massey Ferguson sold a 66% stake to ARGO, the Morra family’s company; ARGO increased its stake in 1994 and bought the last shares, held by AGCO, in 2000. In 2000 the same family also bought the former Case IH plant at Doncaster, which became McCormick. In 2007 ARGO Tractors was formed as the holding company for Landini, McCormick and Valpadana, with production centred at Fabbrico.

For lighting, Landini tractors fall into 3 broad eras:

  • Massey Ferguson era (1960 to 1989): 6500, 7500 and 8500 series from 1973, then the 60, 70 and 80 series from 1988. Simple switched lighting, headlamps in the grille or on the bonnet, rear lamps on the mudguards.
  • Early Argo era (1990s and 2000s): Blizzard, Legend, Ghibli, Mythos, Vision, Powermaster, Powerfarm, Mistral, Rex and Globus among others. Halogen headlamps and cab-roof halogen work lamps.
  • Modern Landini (2010s onwards): Rex4, 5 Series, 6 Series (including 6L and 6RS) and 7 Series Robo-Six. More work lamp positions and factory LED options.

Identifying Your Landini Before Ordering

A Landini model is confirmed by the bonnet decal, the type plate and the serial number. The table below lists the families most often seen in the UK and the lighting they typically carry.

Reading the Model Number

Older Landinis use 4-digit numbers where the first digits give a rough power figure, so a 7500 is around 70 hp and an 8500 around 80 hp. Modern models use a series number and a power figure, so a Landini 7-230 is the 7 Series flagship and a 7-160 the entry model in the same range. The exact specification and lamp fitment come from the type plate and serial number.

Cab and Bonnet Updates

Landini updated cabs and bonnets several times within a range name. A Legend or Powermaster can have different headlamp housings and rear lamps depending on year, so compare the bonnet shape and the old lamp’s mounting rather than relying on the range name.

Landini Headlamps

A Landini headlamp is the dipped and main beam road lamp, usually set into the grille or bonnet front. Cab tractors used with a front loader often have a second pair on the cab, wired through a changeover switch so only 1 pair is lit on the road. Our tractor headlights guide covers sealed-beam, replaceable-bulb and LED units.

Massey Ferguson Era Headlamps

Classic Landinis typically use round or rectangular halogen headlamps, often with H4 bulbs, and sometimes sealed-beam units on early builds. Measure the lens, note the fixing and photograph the back before ordering.

Legend, Powermaster and Vision Headlamps

Argo era Landinis use halogen headlamps, typically H4 60/55W dual-filament bulbs, with some housings using separate H7 bulbs for dipped and main beam. Check the code on the old bulb base, because H4 and H7 do not swap.

Current Landini Headlamps

The 5, 6 and 7 Series use halogen headlamps on many builds and LED units on some higher specifications. A sealed LED headlamp is replaced as a complete assembly, so look up the serial number before ordering.

Landini Work Lights

A Landini work light is a field lamp on the cab roof, pillars, mudguards or rollbar. Open-station and classic tractors typically have 1 rear work lamp. Cab models usually carry 2 front and 2 rear roof lamps, with higher specifications on the 6 and 7 Series adding more roof positions and LED packages.

Halogen Landini work lamps typically use H3 bulbs. The simplest upgrade is to swap each roof lamp for an LED lamp with the same mounting. Browse LED work lamps and match the bracket to the old lamp. For a guide to output and beam pattern, see tractor work lights.

Orchard and Vineyard Models

Rex, Rex4 and other narrow Landinis work under branches and between rows. Compact, low-profile LED lamps mounted tight to the cab or bonnet suit these better than large roof lamps that catch on canopy.

Landini Beacons and Cab Lights

In the UK a tractor with a maximum speed of 25 mph or less must show at least 1 flashing amber beacon on an unrestricted dual carriageway. Landini cabs typically have a beacon mount or pole socket on a rear roof corner; open-station tractors mount the beacon on the rollbar. Check whether you need a 1 bolt, 3 bolt, magnetic or DIN pole fitting before choosing from our tractor beacons.

Cab interior lights use small festoon or wedge bulbs and can take plain LED replacements.

Landini Rear Lights, Indicators and Number Plate Lamps

A Landini rear lamp combines tail, stop and indicator functions, mounted on the mudguards on classic tractors and on mudguard extensions or rear cab pillars on later models.

  • Stop and tail: typically P21/5W (380) twin-filament bulbs.
  • Indicators: P21W (382) behind an amber lens, or PY21W with a clear lens.
  • Number plate: typically C5W festoon or R5W bulbs.
  • Current models: LED rear lamps on some builds, replaced as a complete unit.

Left and right lamps are handed and plugs vary, so photograph the back of the old lamp and browse tractor taillights with the measurements to hand.

Bulb and Voltage Notes

Landini tractors typically use 12V electrics, so buy 12V bulbs and lamps. Multi-voltage LED lamps rated for 12V and 24V suit any Landini. Other points:

  • Bulb codes: read the code from the old bulb.
  • Flasher units: LED indicators can flash fast because the flasher unit reads their low current as a failed bulb. Fit an LED-compatible flasher or load resistors.
  • Electronic tractors: current models may monitor lamp circuits. Choose CAN-bus compatible LED lamps to avoid warnings.
  • Interference: choose LED lamps that meet ECE R10 on tractors with radios or GPS guidance.

Upgrading a Landini from Halogen to LED

Start with the work lamps. A halogen work lamp typically draws around 55W; an LED lamp of similar output draws around 25W to 40W. Replacing 4 roof lamps cuts the load on the alternator and the original switch. When adding extra lamps, run them through a relay and fuse rather than the factory switch.

For road headlamps, a complete E-marked LED headlamp unit is the correct upgrade. An LED bulb in a halogen reflector is not an approved combination: on cars first used from April 1986 the MOT fails it as “light source and lamp not compatible”, unless it is an approved LEDr bulb with its approval sticker, and at the time of writing none is approved for H4 or H7. Agricultural tractors are exempt from the MOT, but the same principle applies on the road. Classic Landinis with round 7-inch lamps can often take a complete approved 7-inch LED unit with an H4-type plug.

Argo Tractors Parts Crossover with McCormick

Landini and McCormick have been sister brands since 2000 and have been built side by side at Fabbrico since 2007. Several ranges are developed together: the Landini 6 and 7 Series were launched alongside the McCormick X7 with the same engines, transmissions and front axles, and the two brands typically share cabs, switchgear and many lamps where the platform is common. A lamp listed for a McCormick on the same platform can be the identical part. The McCormick tractor lights guide covers the McCormick side.

The Massey Ferguson link is mostly historical. Landini built its first crawler in 1959 and continued to supply some tractors to AGCO under a supply agreement, but a 1970s Landini shares few lamp parts with a Massey of the same age. Always confirm crossover by the part number on the lamp.

Buying Tips for Landini Lights

  • Confirm the range, year and serial number.
  • Photograph the old lamp front and back, including plug and part number.
  • Read the bulb code from the old bulb.
  • Buy E-marked lamps for road functions.
  • Check left and right hand on rear lamps.
  • Choose low-profile lamps for Rex and orchard tractors.
  • Use a relay and fuse for extra work lamps.

Frequently asked questions

What headlight bulbs do Landini tractors use?

Most Landini headlamps use halogen bulbs, typically H4 60/55W, with some housings using separate H7 bulbs. Current 5, 6 and 7 Series tractors may have LED headlamps on higher specifications, which are replaced as a unit.

Do Landini and McCormick tractors share lights?

Often. Both brands belong to Argo Tractors and many current Landini ranges share a platform with McCormick X-series tractors. Confirm by the part number on the lamp.

Was Landini owned by Massey Ferguson?

Yes. Massey Ferguson bought Landini in 1959 and sold a 66% stake to ARGO, the Morra family company, in 1989. ARGO bought the remaining shares from AGCO in 2000.

Can I fit LED work lights to an older Landini?

Yes. LED work lamps bolt onto the same roof brackets as halogen lamps and draw less current. Add a relay and fuse if you are fitting more lamps than the original switch was designed for.
