Deutz-Fahr tractor lights fall into 3 eras: air-cooled Deutz D, 06, 07 and DX tractors with round or rectangular halogen headlamps and 1 or 2 work lamps; Agrostar and Agrotron tractors from 1990 to the 2010s with H4 or H7 headlamps and cab-roof halogen work lamps; and the numbered Series 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 with LED options. Identify the era first, then match the bulb code or lamp unit.
This guide covers how Deutz-Fahr lighting is laid out, what each model family typically carries from the factory, the bulb and voltage points that catch people out, and how to upgrade an Agrotron or older Deutz to LED without fault codes or radio interference.
How Deutz-Fahr Tractor Lighting Works
A Deutz-Fahr tractor lighting system is the set of headlamps, work lamps, beacons, cab lights and rear clusters fitted for road and field use, wired through a 12V negative-earth electrical system on the models covered here. Like every modern tractor it splits into road lighting (headlamps, sidelights, indicators, stop and tail lamps, number plate lamp) and working lighting (work lamps, beacons and cab lights).
The brand has a long ownership history that explains why parts cross over. Deutz began as an engine maker in Cologne in 1864, and its parent KHD (Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz) took a majority stake in the machinery maker Fahr in 1968, which is when the Deutz-Fahr name was born. In 1995 the Italian SAME group bought KHD’s agricultural division, forming SAME Deutz-Fahr, now SDF. That makes Deutz-Fahr a sister brand to SAME, Lamborghini and Hürlimann. Agrotron production moved to Lauingen in Germany in 1996, and the Lauingen plant is still the main Deutz-Fahr tractor factory.
For lighting purposes the history gives 3 broad eras:
- Classic Deutz (1950s to late 1980s): D series, 05, 06 and 07 series, Intrac and DX tractors, mostly with air-cooled engines. Simple switched circuits, round or rectangular headlamps, few work lamps.
- Agro and early Agrotron (1989 to around 2012): AgroPrima, AgroStar, AgroXtra, the original Agrotron, Agrotron TTV, K, M and X. Halogen throughout, cab-roof work lamp clusters, separate rear lamp units.
- Numbered series (2012 onwards): Series 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, including the Agrotron TTV models, with factory LED work light packages and, on later builds, LED road lamps.
Identifying Your Deutz-Fahr Before Ordering
A Deutz-Fahr model is confirmed by the bonnet decal, the type plate (usually on the front frame or cab pillar) and the serial number. The table gives the main families seen in the UK and the lighting you can typically expect.
| Family | Introduced | Example models | Typical factory lighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06 series | 1968 | D 4006, D 5206, D 6206 | Round halogen or sealed-beam headlamps, single rear work lamp |
| DX series | 1978 | DX 85 to DX 230, DX 3 from 1984 | Headlamps in the grille, 2 to 4 halogen work lamps on cab models |
| 07 series | 1980 to 1981 | D 6207, D 7207 | Halogen headlamps, mudguard rear lamps |
| AgroPrima, AgroStar, AgroXtra | 1989 to 1991 | AgroStar 6.31, 6.61, 6.71, 8.31 | H4 headlamps, cab-roof halogen work lamps front and rear |
| Agrotron (original, MK2, MK3) | 1996 | Agrotron 4.95, 6.05, 106, 120, 150 | H4 or H7 headlamps, 4 to 8 halogen work lamps |
| Agrotron TTV | 2001 | TTV 1130, 1145, 1160 | Halogen as standard, more work lamp positions |
| Agrotron K, X, M | 2005 to 2008 | K 90 to K 120, X 720, M 600 to M 650 | Halogen work lamps |
| Agrofarm, Agroplus, 5D | From 1996 | Agrofarm 420, Agroplus 410, 5080D | Utility lighting, H4 headlamps, 2 to 4 work lamps |
| Series 5 and 6 | 2012 to 2013 | 5110, 6130, 6165, 6185 TTV | Halogen or LED work lamp packages, MaxiVision cab on Series 6 |
| Series 7, 8 and 9 | From 2013 (Series 8 from around 2020) | 7250 TTV, 8280 TTV, 9340 TTV | Factory LED work light packages on most UK builds |
Reading the Model Number
On classic Deutz tractors the first digits give a rough power figure and the last 2 give the series, so a D 6206 is an 06 series tractor of around 60 hp. Exact specification still comes from the type plate. AgroStar and AgroXtra numbers do not read directly as horsepower, so use the type plate. From the Agrotron 106 onwards, and on the numbered series, the last 3 digits are a rough horsepower figure: a 6165 is about 165 hp and a 9340 TTV about 336 hp.
Mid-Life Updates
The Agrotron went through several updates (MK2 and MK3), and lamp housings, rear cluster shapes and switchgear changed between them. If you are buying a rear lamp or a cab-roof work lamp for an Agrotron, compare the old unit’s shape, mounting holes and connector rather than relying on the model name. The same applies to Series 6 and 7 tractors, which received revised bonnets and cabs during their production runs.
Deutz-Fahr Headlamps
A Deutz-Fahr headlamp is the dipped and main beam road lamp, mounted in the grille on DX, Agro and most Agrotron models, and in the bonnet or on the front mudguards or cab on some later models. Many Deutz-Fahr tractors also carry a second, higher-mounted pair on the cab or front of the roof for use with a front loader, because the grille lamps are blocked when the loader is raised.
Classic Deutz and DX Headlamps
Older Deutz tractors typically carry round halogen or sealed-beam headlamps, with DX models using rectangular lamps set into the grille. Replacement is usually by complete lamp unit or by bulb, often H4 60/55W on later builds. Measure the lens and photograph the back of the lamp before ordering, because sizes and mounting tabs vary between batches. Our guide to tractor headlights explains sealed-beam versus replaceable-bulb units.
AgroStar and Agrotron Headlamps
Agro and Agrotron headlamps are halogen units, typically using H4 dual-filament bulbs or separate H7 dipped and main beam bulbs depending on the housing. The bulb code is printed on the bulb base, so check the old bulb before buying. Loader-equipped Agrotrons often have an extra headlamp pair on the cab, wired through a changeover switch so only one pair is lit on the road.
Series 5 to 9 Headlamps
The numbered series use halogen headlamps on many builds, with LED units on later and higher-specification tractors. Where the headlamp is a sealed LED assembly, replacement is by the complete unit rather than a bulb. Check the dealer parts listing by serial number for these tractors, because lamp specifications changed within a series.
Deutz-Fahr Work Lights
A Deutz-Fahr work light is a field lamp mounted on the cab roof, cab pillars, mudguards or bonnet. Older cabs typically carry 2 front and 2 rear roof lamps; later Agrotron and Series 6 cabs add more positions on the roof edge and pillars.
Deutz-Fahr was early with factory LED work lighting. In 2015 Hella and Deutz-Fahr launched an LED work light package for the 7250 TTV Warrior, using lamps rated at 2,470 lumens each from 30W. The same year the Series 9 TTV (9290, 9310 and 9340) went into production with an LED work light package rated at 47,000 lumens in total. Earlier Agrotrons and the Agro series use halogen work lamps, most often with H3 bulbs, though this varies by lamp.
Typical Mounting Positions
- Front roof edge: 2 to 6 lamps for headland turns and loader work.
- Rear roof edge: 2 to 6 lamps for the hitch, PTO and implement.
- Cab pillars or mirror arms: side lamps for wide implements and hedge cutting.
- Rear mudguards: lower lamps for hitching, often on older non-cab tractors.
Swapping a halogen roof lamp for an LED lamp of the same size and mounting is the simplest upgrade on any Agrotron. Browse LED work lamps and match the bracket style (single bolt, 2 bolt or side-mount) to the old lamp.
Deutz-Fahr Beacons and Cab Lights
A beacon is the flashing amber warning light on the cab roof. In the UK a tractor with a maximum speed of 25 mph or less must show at least 1 amber beacon on an unrestricted dual carriageway, and most farmers run one on any road trip. Agrotron and Series 6 and 7 cabs typically have a beacon socket or mounting point on the rear roof corner, and many older Deutz cabs use a pole-mount socket. For replacement, browse our tractor beacons and check whether you need a 1 bolt, 3 bolt, magnetic or DIN pole fitting.
Cab interior lights are usually small festoon or wedge bulbs in the headliner. They are not road lamps, so a plain LED replacement is fine.
Deutz-Fahr Rear Lights, Indicators and Number Plate Lamps
A Deutz-Fahr rear lamp combines the tail, stop and indicator, and sometimes reverse, functions. On classic Deutz and DX tractors the rear lamps sit on the mudguards; on Agrotrons they are typically mounted on the rear mudguard extensions or cab rear pillars, with a separate number plate lamp.
- Stop and tail: usually P21/5W (380) twin-filament bulbs on halogen clusters.
- Indicators: P21W (382) behind an amber lens, or PY21W with an amber bulb and clear lens.
- Number plate: typically C5W festoon or R5W bulbs.
- Later Series 6, 7 and 9: LED rear clusters on many builds, replaced as a unit.
Rear clusters for Agrotron MK3 and similar models are widely available as replacement units. Always compare the old lamp’s shape, mounting holes and plug before ordering, because left and right lamps differ and housings changed between updates.
Bulb and Voltage Notes
Deutz-Fahr tractors typically run a 12V system, so buy 12V bulbs and lamps. Multi-voltage LED work lamps (often rated 10V to 30V) suit any Deutz-Fahr. Points to check:
- Bulb codes: read the code on the old bulb base. H4 and H7 are not interchangeable.
- Indicator flasher: LED indicator bulbs draw so little current that the flasher unit or bulb monitoring can read them as a failed bulb and flash fast. Fit an LED-compatible flasher or load resistors.
- Electronic tractors: TTV and later Series tractors monitor some lamp circuits. A low-current LED can trigger a bulb-failure warning, so choose lamps marked CAN-bus compatible.
- Radio interference: cheap LED lamps can interfere with radios and GPS guidance. On a tractor with RTK or auto-steer, fit lamps that meet ECE R10 for electromagnetic compatibility.
Upgrading a Deutz-Fahr from Halogen to LED
An LED upgrade on a Deutz-Fahr is easiest at the work lamps and hardest at the headlamps. The halogen to LED upgrade guide covers the process step by step; the Deutz-specific points are below.
Work Lamps First
Replacing 4 H3 halogen roof lamps (around 55W each) with LED lamps drawing around 25W to 40W each cuts the load on the alternator and lighting switch. On a classic Deutz with a smaller alternator this matters, especially if you are adding extra lamps. If you add more lamps than the original switch was designed for, run them through a relay and fuse rather than the original switch circuit.
Headlamps
For road headlamps, a complete E-marked LED headlamp unit is the cleaner choice than an LED bulb in a halogen housing. On cars first used from April 1986, the MOT fails an LED or HID bulb fitted to a halogen headlamp as “light source and lamp not compatible”, unless it is an approved LED replacement (LEDr) bulb with its approval sticker, and at the time of writing none is approved for H4 or H7. Agricultural tractors are exempt from the MOT, but the same type-approval logic applies on the road, and an LED bulb in a reflector built for a filament often gives a poor beam and dazzles oncoming drivers. Browse LED tractor headlights for complete units in common sizes.
Heritage Deutz
Classic air-cooled Deutz tractors with round 7-inch headlamps can usually take a complete approved 7-inch LED headlamp unit with an H4-type plug. Keep the original lamps if you show or sell the tractor as original.
SDF Parts Crossover with SAME, Lamborghini and Hürlimann
Since 1995 Deutz-Fahr has shared engineering with SAME, Lamborghini and Hürlimann inside the SDF group. Tractors on the same SDF platform often share cabs, switchgear, rear lamps and work lamp housings, so a lamp listed for a SAME or Lamborghini can be the identical part to the Deutz-Fahr item. The SAME tractor lights guide covers the Italian side of the group.
Crossover is not guaranteed across a whole range. Confirm by part number, which is usually moulded into the lamp lens or housing, or printed on a label on the back of the lamp. Pre-1995 Deutz tractors share nothing with SAME; their parts come from the KHD era.
Buying Tips for Deutz-Fahr Lights
- Confirm the model, series update and serial number before ordering.
- Photograph the old lamp front and back, including the plug, mounting and any part number.
- Read the bulb code from the old bulb base, not from memory.
- Buy E-marked lamps for any road function: headlamps, indicators, stop, tail and number plate.
- Choose CAN-bus compatible LED lamps for TTV and later Series tractors.
- Check left and right hand on rear clusters and side-mounted work lamps.
- Add a relay and fuse when adding extra work lamps.

Frequently asked questions
What bulbs do Deutz Agrotron headlights use?
Most Agrotron headlamps use halogen bulbs, typically H4 60/55W dual-filament bulbs or separate H7 bulbs depending on the housing and production year. Remove the old bulb and read the code on its base before ordering.
Are Deutz-Fahr tractors 12V or 24V?
Deutz-Fahr tractors typically run 12V electrics. Buy 12V bulbs, or multi-voltage LED lamps rated for 12V and 24V, which suit any Deutz-Fahr.
Can I fit LED work lights to an older Deutz-Fahr?
Yes. LED work lamps bolt onto the same roof brackets as the original halogen lamps and draw less current. On Agrotron TTV and later tractors with lamp monitoring, choose CAN-bus compatible lamps to avoid warning messages.
Do SAME and Deutz-Fahr tractors share lights?
Often, on tractors built since the 1995 SAME Deutz-Fahr merger that share a platform. Many lamps are the same part with a different listing. Confirm by the part number on the lamp before ordering.
Why do my LED indicators flash fast on my Deutz?
LED bulbs draw far less current than filament bulbs, so the flasher unit or bulb monitoring can read them as a failed bulb and flash fast. Fit an LED-compatible flasher unit or load resistors.
