LED tractor beacons

An LED tractor beacon is an amber warning lamp that flashes using light-emitting diodes instead of a rotating halogen bulb, and it is the beacon fitted to most new tractors sold in the UK over the past decade. LED beacons draw under 1A at 12V, have no motor or bulb to wear out, and start flashing the instant the switch is pressed. LED tractor beacons compared with rotating halogen beacons

An LED tractor beacon outlasts a rotating halogen beacon by a factor of 20 or more, because a halogen beacon depends on a 55W H1 bulb and a drive motor that both fail with vibration. LED beacons use a sealed lamp head rated to IP67 or higher, so rain, pressure washing and slurry do not reach the electronics. Power draw is the second difference: a rotating halogen beacon takes 4A to 5A at 12V, an LED beacon takes 0.5A to 1A, which matters on older tractors with a 35A alternator or on trailers fed through a seven-pin plug. The full range of tractor beacons includes both types, and halogen rotating tractor beacons remain the like-for-like choice for a sealed original fitting.

Choosing an LED tractor beacon

Match the beacon to the voltage, the mount and the approval mark. Multivolt 12/24V LED beacons fit any tractor, telehandler or lorry; single-voltage 12V beacons cost less and suit one machine. Mounting comes in four forms: a DIN A pole mount for cab roofs with a standard beacon pole, a three-bolt fixed base, a single central bolt, and a magnetic base with a cigarette-lighter lead for hire or occasional road work. Road-legal amber beacons carry an ECE R65 approval mark, and every LED beacon on this page shows its R65 class in the specification: class 1 for night use, class 2 for day and night. Flash patterns include single, double and quad flash, with rotating-effect LED patterns on the RotaFlash and RotaLED models for drivers who prefer the look of a rotating beacon.
