Relays

A relay is an electrically operated switch that lets a small dashboard switch control a heavy current to work lights, beacons or a trailer socket. This range holds main current relays in 12V and 24V with 4-pin (make) and 5-pin (changeover) connectors from 20A to 70A, plus relay sockets, holders and pre-wired bases, and John Deere relays by part number.

Types of relay in this range

4-pin relays switch one circuit on and off and suit work lights and beacons. 5-pin changeover relays switch between two circuits, for example dipped and main beam. Relays with an integral diode or resistor suppress the voltage spike from an inductive load and protect electronic switches. Micro relays fit modern fuse boxes; standard mini ISO relays fit most tractor cabs and relay boxes. Relay sockets and holders take the relay and provide screw or blade terminals for the loom.

Choosing a relay

Match the coil voltage to the tractor (12V or 24V) and pick a contact rating above the load: four LED work lights at 2A each need a 20A relay; four 55W halogen lights on 12V draw 18A and need a 30A relay. Use a 5-pin relay only where the fifth terminal is needed; a 4-pin relay is simpler to wire. A relay is the correct way to add work lights to a tractor without overloading the original switch. Fuses to protect the relay feed are under fuses and fuse holders, and the work lights themselves under tractor lighting.
