LED rear lights

An LED rear light is a tail lamp for a tractor or trailer that produces the stop, tail, indicator, fog and reverse functions from light-emitting diodes instead of filament bulbs, in a sealed housing with no bulb to replace. LED rear lights fit the same bolt positions as the bulb lamps on most tractors and trailers built since 1990. LED rear lights compared with bulb rear lights

An LED rear light lasts more than 20,000 hours against 1,000 hours for a P21W filament bulb, and it survives the vibration that breaks bulb filaments on a trailer running over rutted headlands. LED stop lamps illuminate 0.2 seconds faster than a filament bulb, which at 25mph gives a following driver an extra 2 metres of warning. Sealed IP67 housings keep water and slurry out, so the lamp does not corrode from inside. Draw is 0.1A to 0.3A per function against 1.75A for a 21W bulb, which matters on a trailer fed through a seven-pin plug. Some older tractors need a load resistor or an LED-compatible flasher relay for the indicator function, and each product page states whether one is required.

Choosing an LED rear light for a tractor or trailer

Match the functions to the vehicle. Tractors need tail, stop and indicator on each side; trailers also need a rear fog lamp on the offside and a pair of red reflective triangles. Combination LED rear lights carry all of these in one unit and are listed by width, mounting pattern and connector. ECE-approved lamps carry the R7, R6 and R38 marks for tail, indicator and fog, and are road legal in the UK.
