Battery Terminals and Leads

Battery terminals and leads cover the parts that connect a tractor battery to the machine: positive and negative terminal clamps, battery cables and leads, earth straps, terminal covers and jump leads. A corroded terminal or a broken earth strap causes dim lights and slow cranking long before it stops the tractor, so these are the first parts to check on a lighting fault.

Types of terminal and lead in this range

Terminal clamps cover lead and brass clamps for standard post, DIN and Japanese post batteries, in positive and negative form. Battery cables cover pre-made leads in 16mm to 70mm with crimped lugs. Earth straps cover braided and PVC-covered straps from battery to chassis and engine to chassis. Covers and boots cover the insulating caps for terminals. Jump leads cover heavy duty leads with 35mm to 50mm cable for 12V and 24V tractors.

Choosing battery terminals and leads

Check the post type on the battery (standard tapered, DIN or JIS) and buy the matching clamp; positive posts are slightly larger than negative on a standard battery. Size cables to the starter current: 35mm cable for most 12V tractors, 50mm or 70mm for 24V machines and large engines. Replace an earth strap with one of at least the same cross-section; a thin strap raises resistance and dims every lamp on the tractor. Battery isolator switches are under switches, and chargers under batteries and charging.
