LED number plate lights

An LED number plate light is a small white lamp that illuminates the rear registration plate on a tractor or trailer using light-emitting diodes, and UK law requires the rear plate to be lit whenever the vehicle uses the road after dark. LED plate lights draw under 0.1A, last more than 20,000 hours and are sealed against water, which suits a lamp mounted low at the rear where slurry and spray collect. Number plate light rules for tractors and trailers

The rear registration plate on a tractor, and on any trailer carrying a plate, must be lit by a white lamp that does not show white light to the rear. Number plate lamps mount above or beside the plate and shine down or across it, and ECE R4 approval on the lamp confirms the beam meets that requirement; every unit on this page carries an R4 mark. A failed plate lamp is a common reason for a roadside stop, so a sealed LED unit removes a recurring bulb failure at the rear of a muck spreader or trailer.

Fitting an LED number plate light

Wire the plate lamp from the tail light circuit so it lights with the side lights, through the existing fuse; the current is too low to need its own relay. Surface-mount units fix with two screws above the plate; bracket-mount units hang from the plate holder and suit trailers with a swinging plate. Multivolt 12/24V units run on any tractor or lorry.
