Autumn and winter lighting

Four lighting jobs to sort before the dark nights

From late October the UK loses daylight before 5pm, so drilling, muck spreading, hedge cutting and feeding all run into darkness. These four categories cover the lights that fail or fall short first.

  • LED work lights for the yard and field

LED work lights deliver 1,500 to 6,000 lumens per lamp in flood, spot or combination beams, and draw a fraction of the current of the 55W halogen lamps they replace. Fit floods for close work around the loader and implements, spots for distance.

  • Amber beacons for road work

An amber beacon is a legal requirement on any tractor travelling at 25mph or less on an unrestricted dual carriageway, and the sensible choice on every road run in the dark. LED beacons fit the same pole, DIN or 3-bolt mounts as rotating halogen units.

  • LED light bars for wide implements

A light bar spreads light across the full width of a drill, cultivator or hedge cutter in one fitting. Bars from 10 to 50 inches suit roof rails, cab brackets and implement frames, on 12V and 24V.

  • Bulbs and spares for the cab

Halogen headlight, work lamp and indicator bulbs fail most often in the first cold weeks. Standard and long-life halogen, xenon and miniature bulbs are stocked singly and in assortment boxes for the workshop.

What a tractor light needs to match

A tractor light is a 12V or 24V lamp classified by position on the machine (headlight, work light, tail light, indicator, number plate light, cab light or beacon) and by approval for road or off-road use. Five details decide fitment: voltage, connector type, beam pattern, mounting and dimensions, and every Agri Lighting product page lists all five.

LED against halogen

An LED work light produces 3 to 5 times the light output of a 55W halogen lamp for around one third of the current draw, runs cooler, and has a rated life of 30,000 to 50,000 hours against 500 to 1,000 hours for halogen. Halogen lamps remain the lower-cost choice for original-fit headlights on older tractors, which is why Agri Lighting stocks both.

Road-legal and off-road lighting

Headlights, tail lights, indicators, number plate lights and amber beacons carry an E-mark or ECE approval number for use on UK roads. Work lights and light bars are off-road lighting and are switched off on the public road. Product pages state the approval where one applies.
